Affirmation of Faith in the destiny of France

Although France was overrun in 1940 and has since experienced all the miseries of occupation by a brutal enemy, the debt of the civilized world to her ancient and enduring culture is so manifold that an affirmation of our faith in the destiny of France is the least we can offer to those countless loyal and courageous Frenchmen and Frenchwomen who, both intheir homeland and beyond the seas, have, at the risk of sacrifices few can conceive, continued to resist the forces of tyranny, and thus share most valiantly in the effort of the United Nations.
We cannot afford to forget that for over a thousand years it has been the mission of France to educate the world, both as a leader in the arts of civilization and as a defender of human dignity. She has given the world some of its greatest philisophers and men of science, and has eyer maintained her supreme prestige in art and literature. It has been well said by a great British authority that « in the lucidity and logical consistency of her interpretation of life she has no rival. » As she has been in the past a great exponent of liberal thought in the field of social science, so will she be tomorrow a great interpreter of the four freedoms by which the world will live.
Civilization is a continous process, and if France were not to continue to play in the post-war world her historic role among the nations, humanity would suffer an irreparable loss. A Strong, restored, creative France, secured against the material agression of her enemies, is indispensable to the solidarity of civilized mankind. France has often been in the shadows, and has always risen. France is rising.
It must be the enlightened endeavour of Australia after war to establish the closest cultural relations with France and to share the spiritual and intellectual advantages that characterize her civilization.
